The historic palais de sport of the famous basketball Italian team VARESE is here and while the first indoor stadium in Italy illuminated entirely with led. Recently, the "Pallawhirpool" of Varese opened in its new form by carrying out a friendly game between local Varese and CSKA Moscow.

The overhaul of the lighting was part of a broader intervention in certain stadium’s areas of (stands, locker rooms, journalists’ booths) and as explained the president of the group Cecco Vescovi - great basketball glory of the past - the new led technology applied for the lighting of the stadium produced reasonable improvements in three major sectors :

• a significant percentage of energy savings of around 70%
• a highly enhanced light quality that meets the high-definition television-making requirements (HD) and ensure greater visual comfort for athletes and spectators
• annihilation of maintenance needs of lighting thanks to the longevity of the new light sources
For the record:

60 projectors ASTRO of DISANO with 32 led each have been used, of 264W total power each (total new installed capacity 15,9 kW) to replace 44 floodlights HQI 1000W & 16 floodlights HQI 400W (total new installed capacity 54 kW), which for obvious reasons of convenience have been placed exactly to the old positions. To achieve the desired lighting result (1.000 lux in the vertical plane & 1.600 lux in the horizontal plane), various optics were used: the ones placed on the ring over the center of the court to a height of ~ 30m. have a wider beam while those placed on the existing catwalks are more concentrated. Finally, the color of light selected was the 5.000oK considered ideal for interior television reception.

Next to come, was the stadium of the Italian basketball rising power and this year's champion, DINAMO SASSARI, which in the meanwhile had been qualified for the preliminary groups of Euroleague.

In the context of participating in the preliminary groups of the Euroleague, which has specific standards regarding the lighting must have the courts in order to ensure proper media coverage (1.500 lux in the vertical plane - 2.500 lux in the horizontal plane), the old HQI 250W floodlights have been replaced with 84 new ASTRO projectors of DISANO with 32 led each, total power 264W.

More specifically :
34 ASTRO projectors with symmetrical optics are placed just above the court to maximize the vertical lighting level while the remaining 50 fixtures are placed laterally along the stadium and they are equipped with asymmetric optics that enable the projection of the luminance flux at 45 ° in order to best exploit the light beam.
